Navy Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) Rota held a grand opening ceremony for its Thrift Shop, Aug. 15, 2022. This ceremony was the reopening of the NMCRS Thrift Shop on Naval Station (NAVSTA) Rota which had been closed since June of this year for its move to a new, more central location.
Joining NAVSTA management and community members in front of the thrift shop, Captain Teague Suarez, Commander of NAVSTA Rota, delivered a keynote address highlighting the importance of this service to the community.
“It’s a huge resource for all the families here,” Suarez said. “I’m really excited to have a beautiful new facility close to where our sailors and families can go.”
Suarez also presented awards – the NMCRS “Goat Dog” awards personally signed by NMCRS President and CEO, retired Lt. Gen. Jack Klimp – to three members of the Rota community for their contributions to NMCRS. and the Thrift Shop.
Then Suarez and McKallah Blanton, director of the NMCRS Rota, cut the ribbon and customers began to flock to the new facility to shop.
“The community reaction to the grand opening was more than I expected,” Blanton said. “It was motivating and inspiring to keep doing what we are doing with our efforts to grow and improve.”
By the end of the shift, many shelves and spaces were cleared and Blanton said they had 87 customers and generated over $1,000 in sales.
“It really is an amazing goal to achieve, and it sets the bar for future sales,” Blanton said. “Every penny we earn is 100% donated to our service members and their families in the form of financial aid, education and emergency travel.”
Blanton hopes that with the increase in sales, they will be able to do more outreach within the community. However, it’s not just sales they need to expand programs and offerings, but volunteers, many of whom have been focused on reopening the thrift store.
“For the NMCRS Thrift Shop volunteers, you have been the backbone of this operation,” Blanton said. “I’m sure it would never have gone so well without all of you and I look forward to working alongside this team!”
The new location for The Thrift Shop is bldg. 3432 which was the old Spanish bank by the installation chapel and the aquatic center. The central location will make it easier for newly arrived families and single service members in the barracks to use the service.
