Flags for Heroes raises funds for the local Marine Corps League

Tori J. Ross May 25, 2022 1 min read

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) — The biannual Flags for Heroes expo and fundraiser is underway.

Soon you’ll see rows of flags set up at Spencer’s Landing, each flag representing someone’s hero.

How it works is you buy a flag for $50 and then that flag is put up in the name of the one you are honoring.

Flags are displayed in May and November.

The money goes to the Marine Corps League of Parkersburg. He supports their community outreach initiatives such as making Christmas bags for local veterans at retirement homes, donating to Shop With a Cop, helping Marines transition to civilian life, and more.

Displaying the flag is not just to honor veterans. You can choose to honor a teacher, your mother, or anyone else you admire.

Donald Dearth, a member of the Marine Corps, explained: “Remember your heroes above all, no matter who they are, whether they are veterans, firefighters, police officers. We had all kinds of things. I had a brother and sister who each bought a flag without knowing the other knew, using their brother as a hero.

The flags will be raised at Spencer’s Landing on Friday afternoon. You can purchase a flag to display before or after the flags are put up. Just call 304-481-0630.

The flag display will be in place for one week.
