How Netflix Employees Enjoy Unlimited Vacation But Get Constructive Criticism in Group Meetings
Netflix may be the biggest streaming service in the world, but it’s run by a boss who his peers have described as “blunt” and “not naturally empathetic.”
Reed Hastings established the mantra in the corporate culture deck in 2009 that its workforce was like a “pro team” rather than a “family”.
Workers can be excluded from the squad and replaced by a more qualified and suitable player if they do not do their part.
But just as the game is competitive, it is also rewarding.
Workers can take advantage of a thoughtful leave policy that allows them to take as many days off as they want.
They are even encouraged to share their concerns and criticisms of the projects with their managers.

Hastings and co-creator Mark Randolph launched the streaming service in 1997.
Fast forward nearly 25 years and the once humble movie rental company has grown into an entertainment powerhouse and movie giant.
The company invested $ 23 billion in new TV shows and movies in 2020 alone.
The streaming service is broadcast to computers and televisions in 190 countries and is watched by 193 million subscribers.
More than 13 million Australians are said to watch the streaming service.
Netflix’s astronomical growth hasn’t just been attributed to the out-of-the-box approach.
The company is known for its vacation program which allows its employees to take as much time off as they want.
Netflix doesn’t keep an eye on the number of days taken and the policy has worked well since its introduction in 2005.
Hastings explains that the policy is aimed at fostering creativity and growth.
“For me it’s about integrating life and work, where I can take a day in the middle of the week to take care of my personal affairs, and during the holidays I will think of a new title or a new marketing campaign. ” Hastings said Sydney Morning Herald.
While the sentiment might seem foreboding, Hastings’ response to certain events led his peers to assert that he was “not a naturally empathetic guy.”
Rising expansion costs have hemorrhaged the business for millions of dollars, and Netflix cut a third of its workforce in 2001.
Randolph said Hasting was less baffled by the massive layoff than his co-creator at the time.
“He’s not a bad person – he just doesn’t feel what other people are feeling,” Randolph said.
“The dominant mode for him is,” It would be irrational for us to keep someone, just to keep us from hurting them.
Hastings’ work philosophy is best encapsulated in a series of slides he co-wrote with former Netflix talent director Patty McCord.

“Freedom and Responsibility” was published online in 2009 and describes the workplace as a “team” rather than a “family”.
“We are like a professional sports team, not a children’s recreational team,” we read.
“Netflix executives hire, develop and cut smart, so we have stars in every role. ”
Workers receive constructive criticism in live group sessions, even bosses being disparaged.
Hastings came to appreciate the value of openness following a management decision that could have ruined the company in 2011.
He decided to split Netflix in half so that the company only handles streaming while its sister service Qwikster takes care of DVD rentals.
Although Qwikster came with the additional subscription fee of $ 8 and had almost a million subscribers remaining.
Workers left the streaming service, and its stock fell 75%.
The managers later told Hastings that they didn’t think Qwikster would work, but decided to keep their opinions to themselves.
Hastings has since encouraged workers to actively voice their opinions.
Failed projects are selected to understand why they failed – a process called “sunshine”.
