The professional area 17XX Cyberspace Operations is now renamed 17XX Information Maneuver OCCFLD.
The Deputy Commander Information ordered the consolidation of the Information Environment Operations Military Occupational Specialties into a single OCCFLD, resulting in the redesignation.
Aligned with Talent Management Modernization, 17XX IM OCCFLD formally manages the career path of Marines with highly specialized training required for space, electromagnetic spectrum operations, cyber warfare, civil affairs, and psychological operations.
“The OCCFLD Information Maneuver provides Marines with the opportunity to continue doing what they are passionate about,” said Lt. Gen. Matthew Glavy, Deputy Commandant Information. “When you put people first and give them the opportunity to pursue careers they are passionate about, they give ten times more back to the team and our mission to lead in EI.”
The 17XX IM OCCFLD provides the Marine Corps with a purposeful, professionalized, and sustainable workforce enabling the Marine Corps to integrate information-related capabilities, operationalizing information as the Marine Corps’ seventh combat function.
“Prior to the establishment of the OCCFLD briefing maneuver, Marines gained valuable experience and skills in a Marine Expeditionary Force briefing group or combatant commands to return to their previous MOS, we forcing to repeat the cycle, never getting Marines with more than three years of experience in information-related positions,” said Col. Jordan Walzer, director, Information Maneuver Division, DC I and former commanding officer , II MIG, II MEF “Professionalization of information-related MOS improves retention and readiness by preventing Marines with valuable skills from having to decide whether to return to their previous MOS or leave the Marine Corps. Marines to continue to follow their passion.”
DC I developed the 17XX Professionalization Plan in close coordination with Total Force Structure Division, Manpower and Reserve Affairs and Training and Education Command to facilitate the implementation of the 17XX professionalization plan.
In addition to pre-existing MOSs primarily in Cyber, Civil Affairs, and PSYOP OCCFLDs, the new IM OCCFLD will transition the existing structure of several free military occupational specialties to create four new primary MOSs.
