Media needs minority representation – CentralMaine.com
A growing problem I have with the media, especially social media and news, is the exemption of minority groups in many issues. I often see in several different media where the sources and interviews used are incredibly biased and ignore the opposing side.
Of course, free speech allows people’s opinions and beliefs to be heard regardless of prejudice, but I also notice that these articles are considered credible sources. For example, issues about racism are sometimes covered by white people and exclude the minority group they cover. Consumers will read these articles without realizing the bias that has been implemented and base their views on unreliable data and opinions.
To combat this, I think there needs to be a greater representation of minorities both with the source and the interviews of the articles and the authors. This would create a more impartial and reliable outlet for consumers.
The issue of the lack of representation of minorities has always been a problem in the media, and it will apparently never cease to be a problem. It’s hard to see the exclusion of so many groups from their own issues, but hopefully, in a while, unreliable sources can be eliminated to create a reliable media company.
