Media statement on the death of Sir Ian Hassall
Save the Children New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Heidi Coetzee said Sir Ian Hassall will be long remembered as a staunch advocate for children, who has dedicated his career to making the world a better place for children here and in the world.
“In his many years of working for children – in medicine, research, counseling and advocacy – Sir Ian’s immense contribution to improving the well-being of children will be felt. for decades. As New Zealand’s first Children’s Commissioner, Sir Ian gave children a voice and a place in politics and decision-making. He played a leading role in defending the repeal of Section 59, which made New Zealand the first English-speaking country to protect our children from all forms of corporal punishment. We are extremely grateful for his tireless work in protecting the rights of children and we are deeply saddened to learn of his passing. It is a great loss for New Zealand. “
