In Spider-Man: Miles Morales, you play as Miles, an Afro-Latino teenager who is clearly uncomfortable and disturbed by his new role and responsibilities. We know it, because Miles tells us so; he expresses his concerns aloud and thoughtfully, to both family and friends. But the shine of the game at the next level lies in its use of gameplay and non-verbal visual cues to reinforce that unease.
In the years 2018 Marvel’s Spider-ManParker’s physical movements were smooth and fluid, whether he was swinging from one building to another or sliding from one point to another. His stealth eliminations had a sort of professionalism; he had honed his tricks during a career in crime fighting, a career long enough to make enemies of several super-villains, including Vulture, Rhino, Electro, Kingpin and Scorpion. Regardless of the skill or non-skill level the player controlled Spider Man, the game was aesthetically forgiving. It never stopped Peter from looking elegant.
Miles, on the other hand, is much less sure of himself. Again, this is independent of the player’s skills – this is built into the character’s inactive movements and gestures. When Miles perches, he wobbles a bit before regaining his balance. When he swings his lines are not smooth; his arms and legs twitch before they regain their shape. When performing a stealthy retreat from above, it leans excessively forward and then back to compensate for the weight of the enemy. One day he will be as gentle as his mentor. But certainly not yet.
